The Oppenstein Brothers Foundation

The Oppenstein Brothers Foundation strives to meet needs in the Kansas City metropolitan area through gifts to non-profit organizations who serve the community through social welfare, education, the arts, and health and wellness. It was founded at the bequest of the Oppensteins, four brothers from Colorado who moved to Kansas City in 1902 and operated a jewelry store at 10th and Main. In this new logo, we wanted to include a nod to this jewelry business in which the brothers first began to find success. The foundation has distributed roughly $50 million since its formation.

Design 1 utilizes an art deco typeface reminiscent of the early 20th century, the time period when the Oppensteins began operating in Kansas City.

The type in design 2 is full of gorgeous little details, like the gaps in the Ps and Rs and the dotted Os. The diamond in this treatment is built of four segments: one for each of the Oppenstein brothers.

Design 3 really came together by accident. I had built that diamond as a fill shape and wanted to switch the orientation. Instead I had a brain fart and accidentally switched the fill and stroke. The result was this sketchy little shape that I loved immediately. Together with the script font, it makes me think of one of the brothers signing their name with an old-fashioned ink pen, flourishing the signature with a little jewel sketch at the end.
